King’s Quest 1 – Reviving the Past

kings-questKing’s quest 1 has been one of my favourite games. It was released by Sierra in 1984 and became one of the most popular PC-based adventure games. I got a copy of it when I was 11 years old. I remember playing whilst holding an English to Greek dictionary for all the words that I didn’t know. After exchanging a few tips with friends, I almost managed to reach the end but was stuck on the final quest inside a cave.

After having spent some time stuck in the cave, I thought of using a hex editor to view the game data in chars and hex. Sure enough, after some searching I got to the text that was describing the piece of the puzzle I was missing. I subsequently finished King’s Quest 1, and I’m very fond of it as it was excellent fun, brilliant education and prompted me on my first hacking experience.

AGD Interactive has made a modern PC version of the old Kings ‘s Quest I and King’s Quest II. It brings back so many memories 🙂

  1. I loved King’s Quest!!! That does bring back fond memories. It is one of my first games on the first computer I ever had i.e. a XT 8 mhz PC computer. Mind you, I had it on a 5 1/2″ floppy as my computer didn’t have a harddrive ;-). It is one of those classic games that will probably make the PC Hall of Fame one day (if there is one). Thanks for the post and download link. I’ll try it out.

  2. What tha! A hex editor, good lord man, 11 years old, way ta-go. KQ1 was my second PC game, the first being PacMan. It took me forever to get that donkey to follow me over and kick the bolder away. Thanks for a blast from the past.

O, check out Peasants Quest if you haven’t already:

  3. he he, yes, these were the days! PCs were so simple, you could literally go through all the 512K RAM by hand. King’s Quest is already top on the PC hall of fame. I’ve read about it quite few times on book chapters describing the history of computer games. BTW, Peasent’s Quest looks fantastic, i’ve bookmarked it and will give it a go soon, thanks 🙂
